Update June 12: We’ve suspended access to Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5. Please Use Opus 4.8 or another model.

**Statement on the US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 **

The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Anthropic models will not be affected.

Just as well I’ve not become addicted to this model. It is also mega-expensive.

A short-term pain for Anthropic but probably a good PR boost. It implies “this is weapons grade AI”. Is this a further rear-guard action from Trump regime to try to stop China from developing competitive technology? I’d say too late.

In all but a few fields China matches and often exceeds US technology. They are blitzing USA on EVs and clean energy technology. On an AI front their models are barely lagging what OpenAI and Anthropic are putting out.

“Since 2023, every model at the frontier of AI capabilities, as measured by the Epoch Capabilities Index, has been developed in the United States. Over that same period, Chinese models have trailed US capabilities by an average of seven months, with a minimum gap of four months and a maximum gap of 14.” Epoch AI
