The X-Twitter brutal fact checking continues - https://x.com/aaronsmith/status/2082449715418017796
Dave Hughes came back to me again last night with a bit of energetic goalpost shifting.
The bigger issue isn’t Dave Hughes. It’s that parts of our media think the person to ask about Australia’s economy is, Dave Hughes.
It’s like asking your plumber to perform your colonoscopy.
“You [Hughes] have a remarkable ability to turn economic fiction into confident public performance. The problem isn’t just the mistake. It’s that once the performance is over, the fiction is simply left behind for your audience to keep repeating.”
“When the errors are painstakingly explained, you don’t correct the record. You simply move on, leaving the misinformation behind for your audience to repeat as though it were true.”
“I’m reminded of a line from Jackson Lamb in Slow Horses - Explaining this to you has become rather like trying to explain Norway to a dog.”
The dodgy debating tactics - changing subject, throwing in furphies, droning on - might work in real-time, but fail when battling an articulate considered social media commentator. Hughes should just walk quietly away from this one.
