Virtually every time I fire up either Claude or ChatGPT’s desktop app, I see there’s an update. The changes are not earth-shattering but are progressive improvements. Here are some.
ChatGPT
It seems ‘Work’ as a label has gone and we’re back to either ChatGPT or Codex.
The actual Chat experience is now front and centre and not buried in a mini-window. (Still available as “mini-chat” but no longer a default)
A welcome move but it’s been a confusing journey.
I do like that in a Chat you can:
-
Open in a New Window: Hooray, wow been able to do that in Microsoft Word since last century. But at least it’s here. (Now Anthropic need to step up - it’s way too modal)
-
A chat can be pushed to
- Open in ‘work’ mode
- Open on chatgpt.com
The ‘open in work mode’ is a means of converting a chat begun in GPT-Live to one you can continue on your desktop.
Today I had a 30 minute round trip by car. On return journey I just casually checked if GPT was now available by Apple CarPlay. It was! Thus I started on a 15 minute two way conversation as I debated options of which camera and lens to pack for an upcoming trip. Very useful responses with few delays in response. Overall amazed by responsiveness. We’ve come along way from Siri -> GPT Gateway. (Claude also appeared in CarPlay. I will give that a go another time.)
Trying to remember and/or find ‘chats’ across ChatGPT seems more challenging than in the past. I expect this will settle.
Claude desktop app
The pace of change in Claude app is slower. They restored sorting of Projects alphabetically. Good but that’s just patching an obvious defect.
The other change I’ve noted is that you can finally change the model used during a Cowork session. Switching may have the cost of blowing cached information and requiring reloading the conversation into new model. Claude desktop app alerts you to.
