Unitree’s new As2-W bolts wheels straight into the feet of a walking robot, which is roughly what I argued for nine days ago.
“Four legs good, two legs bad,” Orwell wrote in Animal Farm. Unitree just proved the real fight was never legs versus wheels.
The As2-W is a quadruped that walks like a robot dog and rolls like nothing needs to walk at all. Each of its four legs ends in a 18 cm- wheel rather than a paw. On a footpath, it drives. At a kerb, a step or a loose gravel slope, the legs take over and it climbs. Unitree rates it for 80cm steps and 45° slopes, which covers most of the built environment a domestic or industrial robot will ever meet.
The numbers back up the party trick. Top speed sits above 6m/s, a brisk jog for something on wheels. Fully charged it manages more than three hours and 33km unloaded, or two-plus hours and 16km carrying a 16kg payload. That is roughly double the range of the standard, legs-only As2 it is built on, which manages only about 13km unloaded on the same charge. Static load tops out around 150kg, useful for anything from a delivery case to a small trailer. All of it wrapped in IP54 dust and water resistance and, at about 25kg with the battery in, light enough to carry up your own staircase if its legs somehow fail to.

This is not Unitree’s first wheeled-leg machine. The B2-W and Go2-W already exist, both bigger and heavier. The As2-W is the compact version, sized for jobs a full quadruped is overkill for and a pure wheeled robot cannot reach.
I made the theoretical case for exactly this design nine days ago: wheels for the flat 95% of a floor plan, legs only for the discontinuities, because walking on every surface is an expensive way to cross a kitchen. Unitree did not wait for the domestic AI companion market to catch up. It shipped the chassis first.
Whether it ends up on footpaths or building sites first depends less on the engineering, which now looks solved, and more on who is willing to pay before the market decides what this class of robot is for.
